COME ARRIVARE AL VEGLIA
Prima di incamminarvi verso il Parco Naturale dell’Alpe Veglia (m. 1750) dovete raggiungere il paese di Varzo, sulla strada SS33, che porta al Passo del Sempione. (Domodossola è la città più vicina con supermercati, hotel, siti storici e il tradizionale mercato del sabato). Giunti a Varzo, lasciate la SS33 e deviate in direzione di San Domenico, che si raggiunge in 12 km. Potete parcheggiare gratuitamente lì o proseguire per 2 km fino a Ponte Campo, dove termina la strada.
Qui si paga una piccola tariffa giornaliera per il parcheggio, ma si risparmia mezz’ora di cammino su strada asfaltata. A Ponte Campo iniziate la salita lungo la gippabile (400 m. di dislivello; un’ora e mezza di facile camminata). Sulla strada, chiusa da una sbarra, possono transitare solo i mezzi autorizzati di proprietari e affittuari di case, gestori di alberghi e allevatori. Su richiesta, i gestori degli alberghi-rifugio potranno portare gli zaini. Nei mesi estivi è possibile percorrere anche un sentiero alternativo, salendo in seggiovia da San Domenico sino all’Alpe Ciamporino, e da qui proseguendo su un sentiero spettacolare e con numerosi saliscendi fino all’Alpe Veglia.
All’Alpe Veglia ci sono poche strutture dove pernottare: tre piccoli alberghi, un rifugio CAI, un campeggio attrezzato, alcune stanze e appartamenti privati (vedere la homepage per dettagli); è indispensabile prenotare. C’è anche un mini-market con un po’ di tutto e pane fresco. Ci sono cinque telefoni pubblici. I cellulari e Internet di solito funzionano, ma potrebbe esservi richiesto di pagare in contanti poiché il tempo non sempre garantisce la connessione e l’uso delle carte di credito. Per raggiungere Veglia è sufficiente la normale dotazione da escursionisti; allo stesso modo da Veglia si possono effettuare facili passeggiate verso numerosi laghetti e bellissime praterie d’alta quota. Altri itinerari più impegnativi, a carattere alpinistico, raggiungono le numerose cime che contornano Veglia quali il Rebbio (3195 m.), il Terrarossa (3246 m.) e, su tutte, il Monte Leone (la cima più alta delle Alpi Lepontine, 3553 m.).
L’Alpe Veglia è inoltre attraversata dalla GTA (Grande Traversata delle Alpi).
Gli alberghi-rifugio e gli alloggi privati sono operativi dopo l’apertura della gippabile (maggio-primi di giugno) e chiudono ai primi di ottobre, quando sulla strada di accesso appaiono le prime formazioni di ghiaccio. In inverno Veglia è isolata a causa delle valanghe che interrompono la gippabile. Solo sci-alpinisti esperti possono raggiungere Veglia superando il Passo Valtendra (provenendo dal Devero) o la Bocchetta d’Aurona (provenendo dal Sempione). In inverno è sempre aperto il locale invernale del rifugio Cai con disponibilità di nove posti letto, ma senza alcun servizio.
La Notte del 14 agosto si accendono i Falò in tutte le frazioni di Veglia e il giorno di Ferragosto si tiene la festa dell’Alpe. S. Messe giornaliere si tengono presso la Casa dei Rosminiani e la S. Messa festiva alla chiesetta di San Giacomo del sedicesimo secolo, all’inizio della piana.
Da MILANO o VARESE in automobile
Prendere e seguire la A8 (Autostrada dei Laghi) fino al bivio per la A26 (l’autostrada Genova-Gravellona Toce) e seguire le indicazioni per Gravellona Toce. Passato l’ultimo casello ad Arona (dove l’autostrada finisce) proseguire senza interruzioni sulla strada, che diventa Strada Statale 33 (superstrada a 4 corsie). Non ci si accorge della differenza se non per il colore dei cartelli stradali che da verde diventano blu. Attenzione, il limite di velocità sulla SS33 è di 90 km/h. Seguire le indicazioni Sempione - Confine di Stato e, dopo Domodossola, prendere l’uscita per Varzo. Arrivati a Varzo, seguire i cartelli per la stazione sciistica di San Domenico.
Da GENOVA o ALESSANDRIA in automobile
Prendere e seguire la A26 (l’autostrada Genova-Gravellona Toce) in direzione Gravellona. Prendere l’autostrada A4, direzione Milano. Proseguire fino all’uscita per la A26, direzione Gravellona Toce. Passato l’ultimo casello ad Arona (dove l’autostrada finisce) proseguire senza interruzioni sulla strada, che diventa Strada Statale 33 (superstrada a 4 corsie). A Briga, prendere la Strada Statale del Sempione per Domodossola. Dopo il confine e la dogana, prendere la prima uscita per Varzo e da lì seguire i cartelli per la stazione sciistica di San Domenico.
PER CHI ARRIVA IN TRENO
Dall’Italia
Tutti i treni, anche quelli internazionali, fermano a Domodossola. Da Domodossola occorre proseguire su treni per la Svizzera che fermino alla stazione di Varzo (vedi sotto per servizio ProntoBus).
Dalla Svizzera
A Brig, prendere un treno per Domodossola che fermi alla stazione di Varzo. Se si arriva in Italia da Locarno attraverso la Centovalli, da Domodossola prendere un treno per Brig che fermi alla stazione di Varzo. Dalla stazione di Varzo parte un servizio di navetta (ProntoBus) per San Domenico con alcune corse che portano fino a Ponte Campo (gli orari delle corse sono consultabili in questa sezione alla voce “QUI TUTTI GLI ORARI”).
PER CHI ARRIVA IN AEREO
Malpensa è l’aeroporto più vicino e da lì a Domodossola, alla stazione internazionale dei treni, c’è un servizio navetta che deve essere prenotato allo +39 0324240333 (Comazzi Alibus).

HOW TO GET TO ALPE VEGLIA
Before walking up to the Natural Park of Alpe Veglia (1750 m.) you must first get to the little town of Varzo, through the route that leads to the Simplon Pass (SS33). Domodossola is the closest town with malls, hotels, historical sites and a century old Saturday market. When in Varzo, you’ll turn for San Domenico and drive up for 12 km. Park your car either there (free of charge) or 2 km further down, at Ponte Campo, where the road comes to an end. You’ll pay a daily little fee for parking, but you save half an hour walking on paved road. At the bridge of Ponte Campo you’ll start hiking up along the jeep trail (400 m. difference in level; an hour and a half easy walk). Only house owners and tenants are allowed to drive on this jeep trail (there’s a locked barrier). On request, your backpacks may be transported by hotel-shelter operators. In the summer there’s another path leading to Veglia. You take the cable-car San Domenico-Ciamporino. From there you’ll hike on a breathtaking “up and down” path to Alpe Veglia.
At Alpe Veglia there are few resorts where to stay for the night: three small hotels, a CAI shelter, an equipped campsite, some private apartments and rooms (See homepage for details). Booking is a must. There’s a mini market for groceries with daily bread. There are five public landline phones. Cell phones and Internet usually work, but you may be requested to pay cash as the weather cannot always guarantee connection and the use of credit cards. Hiking shoes are enough to reach Veglia and the easy walks to the many small lakes nearby and wonderful high pastures. You’ll need mountaineering gear to climb the mountains surrounding Veglia such as Mt. Rebbio (3195 m.), Mt. Terrarossa (3246 m.) and Mt. Leone (3553 m., the highest peak of the Lepontine Alps). Veglia is on the GTA (Route des Grandes Alpes), either arriving from Devero or from the Simplon Pass. Hotel- shelters and private lodgings start to operate after the opening of the jeep trail (May-early June) and they close at the end of September, when it starts getting icy. You can’t reach Veglia in winter because of the avalanches sliding on the trail. Expert ski-climbers may reach it through Valtendra Pass (if coming from Devero) or the Bocchetta d’Aurona (from the Simplon Pass). In winter only the CAI shelter has a nine-bed survival room open, but no services whatsoever.
Bonfire night is on 14th August and Ferragosto (mid-August) celebrations are and 15th August. Daily Mass at the Rosmini resort and Sunday Mass at the 16th century old San Giacomo church in the plain.
From MILANO or VARESE by car
Take and follow the A8 Autostrada dei Laghi up to the fork for the A26 (The Genova-Gravellona Toce Highway). First follow the directions for Alessandria and then for Gravellona Toce. After the last pay toll in Arona (where the highway comes to an end) continue on this same road for Gravellona Toce. It becomes a 4 lane freeway: Route SS33. You’ll hardly realize the difference but for the color of the road signs that will change from green to blue. Attention, the speed limit on route SS33 will be 90 km/h. When in Brig, take the Simplon Pass route for Domodossola. After the border and customs offices, take the first exit for Varzo and when there, follow the road signs for the San Domenico ski resort.
For people coming by train
From Italy
Any train stops in Domodossola (also the international ones). Here you may take a taxi or catch a train for Brig which stops at Varzo station. Here there is a small bus (Prontobus) for San Domenico, with a few runs to Ponte Campo. (Check Prontobus schedule at the voice “QUI TUTTI GLI ORARI”)
From Switzerland
When in Brig, take a train for Domodossola which stops at Varzo station. If coming to Italy from Locarno through the Centovalli railroad, get to Domodossola train station and take a taxi or catch a train for Brig which stops at Varzo station. For people coming by plane
The closest airport is Malpensa Airport and there’s a shuttle service for Domodossola train station. (Comazzi Alibus – Booking required at 00390324240333).

WIE KOMMT MAN NACH ALPE VEGLIA
Bevor Sie zum Naturpark von Alpe Veglia (1750 m) hochwandern, müssen Sie zuerst in die kleine Stadt Varzo gelangen, auf der Route, die zum Simplonpass führt (SS33). Domodossola ist die nächstgelegene Stadt mit Einkaufszentren, Hotels, historischen Stätten und einem Jahrhunderte alten Samstag Markt. Wenn Sie in Varzo angekommen sind, biegen Sie ab nach San Domenico und fahren Sie für 12 km die Straße entlang. Parken Sie Ihr Auto entweder dort (kostenlos) oder 2 km weiter entfernt, in Ponte Campo, wo die Straße endet. Sie zahlen eine tägliche Gebühr für das Parken, aber Sie ersparen sich damit einen halbstündigen Gang auf einer gepflasterten Straße. In Ponte Campo fangen Sie an, den Jeep-Weg hochzuwandern (400 m Höhenunterschied, ein eineinhalb Stunden Spaziergang). Nur Hausbesitzer und Mieter dürfen auf dieser Jeep-Strecke fahren (Sie ist mit einer Stange verschlossen). Auf Wunsch können Ihre Rucksäcke von Hotel-Betreibern transportiert werden. Im Sommer gibt es einen weiteren Weg nach Veglia: Sie nehmen die Seilbahn San Domenico-Ciamporino, und von dort wandern Sie auf einem atemberaubenden Pfad zu Alpe Veglia.
In Alpe Veglia gibt es nur wenige Resorts, wo man für die Nacht bleiben kann, drei kleine Hotels, ein CAI Schutz, ein ausgestatteter Campingplatz, einige private Wohnungen und Zimmer (siehe Homepage für Details). Es ist wichtig im Voraus zu buchen. Es gibt einen Minimarkt für Lebensmittel mit täglichem frischem Brot. Es gibt fünf Festnetz-Telefone. Handys und Internet funktionieren normalerweise, aber Sie könnten aufgefordert werden, bar zu bezahlen, da das Wetter nicht immer die Verbindung und die Verwendung von Kreditkarten garantiert. Wanderschuhe genügen, um Veglia zu erreichen und für die leichten Spaziergänge zu den vielen kleinen Seen in der Nähe und den wunderschönen Hochweiden zu unternehmen. Im Winter hat nur der CAI Schutz ein Neun-Bett-Raum offen, aber ohne jeglichen Service.

Wenn Sie in Brig sind, nehmen Sie die Simplon Pass Route nach Domodossola. Nach der Grenze und dem Zollamt nehmen Sie die erste Ausfahrt nach Varzo und folgen Sie dort den Wegweisern für das Skigebiet San Domenico.
Mit dem Zug
Aus Italien
Jeder Zug hält in Domodossola (auch die internationalen). Hier können Sie ein Taxi oder einen Zug nach Brig nehmen, der am Bahnhof Varzo hält. Hier gibt es einen kleinen Bus (Prontobus) nach San Domenico, der an bestimmten Uhrzeiten in Ponte Campo hält. (Prontobus Zeitplan bei der Stimme "QUI TUTTI GLI ORARI")
Aus der Schweiz

Taxi von DOMODOSSOLA
Es gibt mehrere Taxi-Dienste vom Bahnhof Domodossola die direkt nach San Domenico-Ponte Campo fahren. Einige bieten spezielle Tarife für Gruppen bis zu 13 Personen (auch für den Transport vom und zum Flughafen Malpensa) Reservierung erforderlich.

San Domenico è dotato di numerosi punti di ristoro e di ampi parcheggi gratuiti.
Da qui parte la funivia che porta all'Alpe Ciamporino.
Per salire al Veglia a piedi si può parcheggiare a San Domenico oppure si può arrivare in macchina al parcheggio di Nembro/Ponte Campo (a pagamento) al fine di evitare mezz'ora di strada asfaltata a piedi.
Da qui si inizia a salire tramite la comoda mulattiera/gippabile. (il dislivello è di 400m circa)
Alternativa è quella di prendere, da San Domenico, la >> funivia per l'Alpe Ciamporino << e poi da lì raggiungere il Veglia attraverso un panoramico sentiero "quasi" in discesa. (dislivello 200m in discesa)
Una comoda navetta compie il percorso da Varzo a Ponte Campo (e ritorno) con fermate intermedie.
